For fathers who love history, there is no better city than Edinburgh. An unmissable visit to the famous Edinburgh Castle which sits atop Castle Rock should be on your itinerary. This ancient fortress gives you an insight into Scotland’s checkered past and offers amazing views over the city. The castle also contains medieval treasures such as the Stone of Destiny and Crown Jewels.

Walking down the Royal Mile which stretches from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse (Queen’s official residence in Scotland) through Old Town would be very interesting. You will come across several historical landmarks, small shops selling cute things, and typical Scottish pubs where you can have a pint with some Scottish food.

Edinburgh boasts numerous museums and galleries catering to all tastes. The National Museum of Scotland is one of the places where visitors can explore nature, science, Scottish heritage, and technology among other exhibitions. This is a wonderful experience enjoyable for dads as well as their kids.

Scottish National Gallery on the other hand caters more towards those fathers who are fond of art with its large collection of European masterpieces alongside works done by Scottish artists themselves. They provide the perfect balance between learning and leisure, making them great stopovers during sightseeing.

Those who love outdoor activities will also find satisfaction in Edinburgh’s natural beauty. A hike up Arthur’s sitting extinct volcano- rewards with sweeping views across the cityscape and beyond that takes relatively less effort to climb up on foot. It acts as an opportunity to keep healthy while enjoying fresh air in Scotland.

Another peaceful haven is the Royal Botanic Garden offering beautiful gardens and exotic plant collections; where you can have a nice leisure walk or a family picnic.

While in Edinburgh, one must taste typical Scottish dishes. Haggis, smoked salmon, and other culinary delights are offered by restaurants and pubs all over the city. There are also many whisky bars and distilleries for dads. Therefore, exploring the whisky-making process in the Scotch Whisky Experience is possible, or visiting a local distillery where you will taste some of Scotland’s best spirits.

Edinburgh is an incredibly child-friendly city; kids will not be bored there. The Edinburgh Zoo is filled with all types of animals including the famous giant pandas. Dynamic Earth, on the other hand, takes visitors through interactive displays explaining the history of the earth that children would find interesting.

The Harry Potter fans within your family would appreciate watching J.K. Rowling’s inspiration come alive in this city just like magic. There was so much magic going on, from Elephant House Café where she slogged away writing these books during her early years as an author to those narrow lanes that resemble Diagon Alley. In fact, there is even a little bit of wizardry there with “Harry Potter World” being said about Edinburgh’s winding streets like those of Diagon Alley

If you plan your visit during one of Edinburgh’s many festivals, you’re in for a treat. During August, Edinburgh International Festival and Fringe Festival turn the city into a hub of cultural activities with lots of performances, art shows, and entertainment to keep one busy. These festivals are an excellent opportunity to feel the pulse of the arts community in town and watch some unusual performances.

Fathers will find plenty of things to do in Edinburgh, a city that appeals to a diverse range of interests.
