Ingredients:

One cup, or twelve ounces, of fresh or frozen cranberries

1 cup granulated sugar

1 cup water

Optional: Zest of 1 orange or lemon (for added flavor)

Optional: 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon or a cinnamon stick

Instructions:

Prepare the Cranberries:

Rinse the cranberries thoroughly under cold water and remove any stems or damaged berries. If using frozen cranberries, there’s no need to thaw them before cooking.

Combine Ingredients in a Saucepan:

In a medium saucepan, combine the cranberries, sugar, water, and any optional ingredients like citrus zest or cinnamon.

Cooking:

Heat the mixture on medium-high and bring it to a boil.

Stir occasionally to dissolve the sugar.

Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until most of the cranberries have burst.

Stir occasionally during this time.

Thicken the Sauce:

As the cranberries burst and the mixture thickens, use the back of a spoon or a potato masher to gently crush some of the cranberries. This helps to create a thicker sauce. Be cautious as it can splatter due to the hot liquid.

Taste and Adjust:

Taste the sauce once it has thickened to your desired consistency. Add a bit more sugar if that’s how you want it to be sweeter. If it’s too tart, you can add a bit of honey or maple syrup. Adjust the flavors to suit your taste.

Cool and Serve:

After taking the pot off the stove, allow the cranberry sauce to reach room temperature. It will become more thicker as it cools.

You can serve the cranberry sauce immediately or transfer it to a bowl or airtight container and refrigerate. It will keep well in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Tips:

Texture Preference: If you prefer a smoother sauce, you can blend the cranberry mixture using an immersion blender or a regular blender once it has cooled down.

Flavor Variations: Experiment with additional flavors like vanilla extract, grated ginger, or a splash of apple cider for a unique twist.

Make Ahead: Cranberry sauce can be made a few days in advance of serving, allowing flavors to meld together.

Enjoy your homemade cranberry sauce! It’s perfect for pairing with roasted turkey, chicken, or even as a delightful accompaniment to cheese boards.
