Creating a Healthy Relationship with Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence has become a part of our daily lives.  From helping us write and research to recommending content and answering questions, AI can save time and make many tasks easier. However, like any technology, it is important to develop a healthy relationship with it.

AI cannot replace our Judgement

AI can support your thinking, but it should not replace your own judgement, creativity or decision-making. Use it to generate ideas, explain difficult concepts or help organise information, while taking time to form your own opinions.

Know When to Disconnect

AI tools are designed to be readily available, but you do not have to use them constantly. Set boundaries around when you use AI, particularly during personal or restful periods. Spending time away from screens allows your mind to think, reflect, and recharge independently.

Avoid Becoming Over-Reliant

It can be tempting to ask AI to make every decision—from what to eat to how to respond to a message. While AI can offer useful suggestions, maintaining confidence in your own ability to make everyday decisions is important for independence and self-trust.

Protect Your Privacy

Think carefully before sharing personal, confidential, or sensitive information with an AI tool. Understanding how a service handles information is an important part of responsible digital wellbeing.

Keep the Human Connection

AI can provide information and assistance, but it cannot replace meaningful human relationships. Make time for conversations, friendships, family activities, and face-to-face experiences that technology cannot replicate.

Practise Intentional AI Use

Before opening an AI tool, ask yourself: “What am I trying to achieve?” Having a clear purpose can prevent endless experimentation and unnecessary screen time.

A healthy relationship with AI is about balance rather than avoidance. Use artificial intelligence to enhance your abilities, save time, and support learning, while continuing to protect your independence, privacy, creativity, and human connections.

AI should make life easier – not make us feel that we cannot function without it.
