Simple Tomato & Mozzarella Salad (Caprese Style)

The simplicity and freshness of the Tomato and Mozzarella Salad, also called Insalata Caprese in Italy, is a prime example of Mediterranean cooking. It originated in Capri and first appeared in the early 20th century, representing the colours of the Italian flag: green basil, white mozzarella, and red tomatoes. Ripe tomatoes, creamy mozzarella, fresh basil, olive oil, and sea salt are some of the main components of this salad, which highlights the harmony and purity of seasonal fruit. It embodies the Mediterranean dining philosophy of emphasising quality and is traditionally served as an antipasto. These days, it is well-liked all over the world as a flexible cuisine that is valued for its nutritional value and lightness. It may be served as a main course, a side dish, or a component of a summer meal, giving everyone a taste of Italian sunshine.

Ingredients (Serves 2–3):

  • 3 medium ripe tomatoes (or a handful of cherry tomatoes)
  • 1 ball of fresh mozzarella cheese (about 125g)
  • A handful of fresh basil leaves
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • A sprinkle of sea salt (to taste)
  • Optional: freshly ground black pepper or a drizzle of balsamic glaze

Guidelines:

Get the ingredients ready:
Clean the basil leaves and tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes and mozzarella into uniform circles; if using cherry tomatoes, cut them in half.

Put the salad together:
On a dish, arrange the tomato and mozzarella slices alternately (tomato–mozzarella–tomato). For colour and flavour, tuck basil leaves in between each layer.

Dress the salad by evenly drizzling it with olive oil. Add sea salt and, if you’d like, a little balsamic glaze or black pepper.

Serve fresh: Savour it right away as a side dish, light meal, or appetiser. To fully enjoy the flavour of the tomatoes and mozzarella, it is best served at room temperature.

Benefits to Health:

Tomatoes: Packed with potassium, vitamin C, and lycopene, a potent antioxidant that helps prevent some types of cancer and promotes heart health.

Mozzarella: A lower-fat alternative to many cheeses, it’s a fantastic source of calcium and protein that supports healthy bones and muscles.

Basil: Rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidant components, basil boosts immunity and combats free radicals.

Olive Oil: Packed with polyphenols and monounsaturated fats, olive oil promotes heart health, balances cholesterol, and lengthens life (a crucial part of the Mediterranean diet).

Sea Salt: When used sparingly, sea salt naturally enhances flavour and adds vital minerals like potassium and magnesium.

Simple, fresh, and well-balanced, this salad has the ideal ratio of protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats. It is quick to prepare, pleasantly gratifying, and improves heart health, energy, and skin vitality.
